I
If I wanted a husband I would marry someone who needs to be in charge.
But I don’t want someone who needs to be in charge -
I need someone to work with me in the ebb and flow, and
make things work when they’d rather not, and
bend for me.

II
I would rather live by a river than the ocean; the ocean makes up its own mind
and would no sooner change course than the Earth would stop revolving around the Sun.
When something needs to give the river will give,
when something needs to change the river will change,
when the earth moves and the world moves the river wonders, what can I do?
and does.

III
The ocean doesn’t.

IV
If I wanted a wife I would marry someone who needs me to be in charge.
But I don’t want someone who needs me to be in charge -
I need someone to stand on their own feet without budging, and
get going when the going gets tough, and
be strong for me.

V
I would rather live in a forest than a rose garden; a rose garden can’t look after itself
and can be ruined in a day.
A forest can be flooded out and still stay growing,
a forest can be burned to the ground and grow up again,
when the earth moves and the world moves a forest wonders, what can I do?
and does.

VI
A garden doesn’t.

VII
If I wanted to marry someone who could bend with me,
stand with me,
change with me,
stay with me,
live with me,
I would marry you.

VIII
So I will.
