Walmart is a deceptive type of retail store. I think that I am getting a great deal… and I am… but at what cost? i saw a bumper sticker long ago before the curent “recession.” (HA) It said “NO JOB? EAT YOUR IMPORT.” Shall we call it what it is?
When we outsource American jobs to obtain more profit for the business owner, the business owner gets richer and the now unemployed person gets poorer. We get a cheap deal… but we (or someone we know) is now unemployed. Take it to the logical conclusion. I can get a good deal and support loss of jobs in our country or I can pay what I cannot affford and help my brother or sister, citizen of the USA. Are you hearing me? Don’t look now but you might be next.
Would not public works projects to help the infrastructure be better than extending unemployment only? Granted, I cannot dig ditches… BUT I CAN LAY BRICK. Go figure. Who would even guess that I possessed that skill? But HOW WOULD THE GOVERNMENT KNOW IF THE QUESTION WAS NOT ASKED?
Our culture today tells us that Uncle Sam owes us something. Uncle Sam owes us NOTHING!! What ever happened to “Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You, But Ask What You Can Do For Your Country.” Did JFK die for nothing?
I think that it is about time that we contribute to our home land. We need to help ourselves to a better life for us and for our children. The new homeless is here and now. Not you? I would not rest on that. WHAT CAN YOU DO AND WHAT WILL YOU DO? SILENCE IMPLIES CONSENT. MOVE OR BE MOVED. THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
If I come up missing, pls do not stop looking for me. We are supposed to have freedom of speech. Pls be watchful. Does it still exist? Do not just bank on it. Check it out.
A few years ago I started calling Wal-Mart “Great Wall Mart,” because everything there comes from China. At first we didn’t shop at Wal-Mart because there were none close to us. Now there are some sorta close, and we have been a few times. It’s depressing. The one we went to had narrow aisles crammed with cheaply made stuff, shopped hungrily by wide people wearingf cheaply made stuff. We shop elsewhere.
I have decided that their motto is “We don’t let quality stand in the way of giving you a great price!” Shopping there is racing to the bottom fo the slippery slope, I think.
The three main reasons I don’t shop at walmart:
Terrible quality…
Crazy people…
Customer service that is not merely at zero, but somewhere in the negatives…
And I agree, Arthur–that has got to be one of the most claustrophobic stores I have ever been in.
Melodi, this is an interesting essay, and one I shall have to ponder a bit. I’ve been boycotting walmart for a while now because I think they’re a terrible company. Plus, I used to work for them, and they “encouraged” (AKA required) employees to work off the clock if they were running behind. I’ve also heard some horror stories about what they are actually involved in when it comes to their dealings with China (unfortunately I have a terrible memory, so I can’t actually tell you… Reese could though). Anyway, ultimately I boycott them on principle. They are just a nightmarish company. I haven’t bought anything from them in years.
I have been going there for cleaning supplies, paper products, DVD’s and stuff like that. They do carry a lot of merchandise mfg’d here. One thing I do like about them is that you can get a number of RX’s very cheap. I have a thing about being gouged by pharmaceutical companies, as well. What we paid $80 for at Longs, we could get in Mexico for under $10. Who am I to think that business should have ethics? I’m an idealist. Where is the logic in that?
