99 Words: Donut

Nobody needs a donut. Nutritionally empty, it’s about as healthy as getting hit in the head with a stick. It is sweet fluff wrapped around nothing. A donut is a ring made of sugar not brass, grasped by those who want a quick reward. While it almost never fails to satisfy, the satisfaction is fleeting.

Don’t mistake me – I am not a member of the Down With Donuts party. Far from it. But we choose best when we choose wisely, knowing a thing for what it is.

So I choose knowledge, and pastry in moderation. Or sometimes the reverse.

“wrapped around nothing.” I get it! This is an awesome line.

However, I beg to differ with the sentiment! While this confection perfection lacks the caloric value of green veggies or the roasted breast of a bird, it contains the ability to cheer someone up, to make the sun shine and the birdies sing, and its sugar can provide a much needed lift to one who is feeling the lack-of-sugar-headache. I have those. They hurt.

Now, someone might say “fruit! fruit has sugar!” But to them I say, fruit does not make the sun shine nor the birdies sing. Fruit looks pretty in a bowl, but it’s sugar is deceitful, a cruel woman who tempts her lover with sweet sweet promises, but then fills them with a tart torment.

Hmm, I gotta go with Naomi on this one. I loves me a good donut. But it is definitely true, the calories are excruciatingly empty… ah, why can’t the good stuff be good *for* you?
